CHARACTER
Name: Ryuuji Suguro (nicknamed "Bon" in canon)
Canon: Blue Exorcist (manga)
Age: 16
Timeline: Chapter 57
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: Before I can properly explain Bon's personality, you need to see a picture of him. Why? Because a lot of his personality is based around how he looks and how people react to how he looks. So click on this and look at it first.

Bon looks very intimidating. Even when he's not yelling or about to punch a demon in the face, he looks scary. Everything about him, from the bulky body to the piercings and dyed hair, just screams "delinquent". And really, that's what everyone expects of him: he's a teenage delinquent who gets in fights and would sooner stab you than shake your hand.

Which is mostly right, to be honest. Bon wouldn't go so far as to stab someone, but he is quite loud, and his thousand-yard stare can frighten even the toughest of men. Bon is all too aware of how he looks and what people assume about him, so it's very easy for him to live up to those expectations and be scary. It's the reason why he only has two friends at the start of the series, and those two have been his friends since they were all in diapers.

Usually the first thing about Bon that surprises people is how smart he is. Delinquents are not known for being smart; they're usually the ones to skip class and not care one iota about their education. But Bon is very smart, and he takes his studies seriously. In the cram school classes (where students learn to become exorcists), Bon is frequently at the top of the class, out-performing everyone else by miles. In the regular classes, Bon is in the A class (classes are decided by how well you score on exams, with the A class being the top scorers. The only other student to share the A class is Yukio, who is heralded as a genius by pretty much everyone in the series), and probably is one of the top performers there as well. He's also pretty smart outside of classes as well, and proves to be a decent judge of character. Usually.

But for as smart as Bon is, he is very judgmental. He holds everyone to a high standard, and when someone can't meet that standard, he thinks they're a slacker. This is why he and Rin did not get along at first: Rin is not very book-smart, and he tends to fall asleep in class, which Bon sees as a sign that Rin is an idiot and not worth his time. Over the course of the series Bon starts to outgrow this behavior, but it's still noticeable at times. He gives people grief for not thinking their actions through, and he still gets on Rin and Shima's cases for not taking their studies seriously.

Bon also has an incredibly short temper. Normally, when he is not angry, he is a decent person and can actually be fun to be around. But it is very easy to set him off, and his primary way of showing his anger is by yelling. This, combined with his scary appearance, is why Bon scares off people so easily. He's not one to actually hit people, but most people think that the yelling is a sign of more violence to come and just take off. Sometimes Bon does show regret for being so angry all the time, but usually he just scoffs and deals with it in his own way.

In many ways, Bon is a foil to Rin. They're both teenagers in a very unforgiving world, they both have the same goal (become strong enough defeat Satan), and they both have huge chips on their shoulders. This is probably why they butt heads so often. It's not easy to get along with someone who is a lot like you. But while their stories are very similar, there is one key difference: method. Rin was born into power. He has Satan's flames, and he is studying to become a Knight, which is an exorcist who fights demons with swords. While it certainly isn’t easy to control those flames (one who story arc was about Rin learning to tone down the flames and only burn what he wants to burn with them), he doesn't really have to worry about not being strong enough, because the strength is already there. He just has to hone it. Bon, on the other hand, was not born with that kind of power. He has to study hard and practice a lot to get stronger, because at the end of the day he is just a normal human. That strength does not come pre-installed in him.

That is why he gives people such a hard time about studying, or just putting forth effort in general. For him, he has to do it to become stronger. He can't just sleep through his classes and expect to get better. There's a line from him in one of the earlier chapters that explains his mindset: "Why are you even here if you're just going to sleep through class?" For him, he can't understand why anyone would give less than their best, because right now they are building their future, and they'll only get out of it what they put in.

Bon is also bitter about a lot of things in his life. For one, the temple he is from was mostly-destroyed in the Blue Night, and it was regarded as cursed after that. Everyone in his hometown badmouthed both the temple and the high priest (Bon's father), but his father refused to do anything about it. This bothered Bon for years, and it was one of the driving factors in why he decided to become an exorcist. If his father won't do anything about the temple's reputation, then he will.

However, Bon isn't entirely made up of anger, bitterness, and judgement. It is very difficult to get close to him, but once someone manages it, Bon proves to be incredibly loyal. He understands the value in a good, trustworthy friend, so when someone proves to be good and trustworthy, Bon stands by them until the end. This is how Bon shows he's finally accepted Rin, actually: during a very tough fight, one where they were both likely to die, Rin refused to back down and run, even when Bon told him to. He stood beside Bon, proving to Bon that Rin was someone who could be trusted, even despite his faults.

Bon also has a touch of kindness to him too. When he's not yelling, looking intimidating, or being angry about something, he can actually be very insightful. He's not above helping others, and he genuinely does make an effort to get along with people. It just takes a bit of work to get him to that point.

He does smile, too. It may only be in four or five panels total in the entire manga so far, but he has smiled genuinely.

Bon is also a very strong person, both physically and emotionally. Physically is pretty obvious, he's built like a brick wall anyway. But he's been shown to pick up his classmates without any trouble, and he's been able to grab onto demons and stop them. Mentally, Bon is also like a brick wall. When things truly bother him (not in the 'that kid is lazy and not worth my time' bothering, but truly bothersome), he keeps those feelings inside, not letting anyone know about them. During most of the Impure King arc, Bon had been keeping his feelings about Rin (specifically Rin's tendency to keep his problems to himself and not let others help him. Ironic much?) quiet, until it got to be too much and Bon yelled at him about it, asking him if he really saw any of his classmates as his friends, what with how he was always shutting them out.

That is how Bon handles pressure: he keeps it locked deep down inside, letting it stew until he can't help it anymore. It is actually good at times, though, because it means Bon can force down his feelings about something under control and still perform as an exorcist. Like in the most recent arc, he's a mess of feelings about being betrayed and having one of his close friends kidnapped, but he keeps that all forced down to focus on the task at hand, which is currently fighting very powerful demons. Bon is pretty good about staying focused like that.

Bon is also very sensitive about certain topics. They are usually the ones that get him yelling right away, like being teased about his abilities. He is an Aria, and traditionally Arias have to be protected by other exorcists while they chant their verses, because if they're interrupted then they can't do their exorcist things. Rin taunts him about this sometimes, calling him 'a princess locked away in a castle', and Bon responds exactly how you would expect him to. Also, he made a girl cry once by refusing their love confession, and Rin and Shima gave him a really hard time about it. So, big important things he keeps to himself, while little annoyances get yelled at.

Finally, It's worth pointing out that, while Blue Exorcist is about serious topics and fighting to save the world, Kazue Kato does a very good job of writing teenagers behaving like teenagers. So while Bon is very tough and smart, he has his moments of doing stupid teenager things, because he is still a stupid teenager. All of Bon's problems are compounded by the fact that he's still a kid but acts like an adult at times but still has confusing feelings about stuff and doesn't always know how to handle things like dates and friend-making and normal stuff like that.

As a note, in Japanese Bon speaks very informally and rudely. In the manga scans, this is usually translated by adding in swear words. So, I'm going to write his speaking with a little bit of swearing mixed in, to get the same idea across.

Background: This wiki covers some of Bon's past. However, this wiki mostly covers the anime, and the anime ended just before the huge story arc about Bon's family and their past. So, I'm going to write out the rest that isn't covered in the wiki. Read the stuff at the link first, then come back here.

Sixteen years before the start of the series, when Bon's mother was pregnant with him, a terrible illness spread throughout the temple. Most of the residents fell ill, with the especially vulnerable (old people, children, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, etc.) getting the worst of it. Bon's mother was slowly dying from it, and his father was helpless to stop it. Bon's grandfather insisted on praying the disease away, but it just wasn't working, and everyone was at a loss for what to do. But they did not dare betray the head priest, so they kept praying, hoping it would help somehow.

Then one day a loud priest showed up to steal a sword, and as luck would have it this priest also knew how to make the cure for this particular disease. So he taught them how to make the cure, and then he stole the sword anyway and ran off, and Bon's father was left with his faith shaken. If prayers had done nothing, then why were they even praying in the first place?

This particular incident is very important to Bon's past. Not only did it save his mother's life, which in turn saved his as well, but it made his father change into a very different person than he had been. See, at first Bon's father didn't even want Bon to become an exorcist. He wanted the burden of running the temple and keeping the impure king locked away to be left to the older generation, so that the young kids could grow and become whatever they wanted to be. That burden to 'carry on the family line' would have normally been right on Bon's shoulders, since he is the only child of the current head priest. But Bon's father wanted Bon to make his own choices and not feel that pressure.

Of course, Bon took the distance between himself and his father as an insult, and decided to become an exorcist anyway. Because what better way is there to flip your middle finger at your parents than to do exactly what they don't want you to do?

This all comes to a head during the Impure King arc, where everyone has to travel to Kyoto to deal with a demon known as the Impure King. For pretty much the whole story arc, Bon is angry at his dad and not willing to talk to him. He's also angry at Rin, because he had just found out that Rin is Satan's son (and Bon REALLY does not like Satan. At all.), and he's angry at everyone involved with the revival of the Impure King because it's going to level Kyoto if they aren't stopped. So basically, Bon is just angry.

Then he finds out about his father being distant because he wanted to protect Bon, not because he disliked him or didn't trust him. He finds out about the secret pact that the head priest has to make, and he ends up taking his father's place in the ritual that creates the barrier which prevents the Impure King from escaping down the mountainside and to downtown Kyoto. This is the point where Bon really starts to change, going from "angry kid who's mad at the world" to "responsible teenager who can be counted on to get shit done".

After the Impure King is defeated, everyone heads back to the academy. After a few minor stories in which Bon did not play a huge part in, the manga gets to the festival arc. During a school festival, one of Bon's closest friends (Shima) is revealed to be a traitor, and he helps a secret group (the Illuminati) kidnap another one of their classmates (Izumo). Everyone is obviously broken up about this, but Bon is really hit hard by it. Before that moment, Bon had been starting to open up and be a bit more friendly with everyone. But once Shima, a childhood friend who Bon had really trusted, betrays them, Bon grows distant again. Outside of a couple shouting matches with Rin, he doesn’t say much for the rest of the arc, up until they're breaking in to the Illuminati headquarters to rescue Izumo.

At the end of chapter 57, where I am taking Bon from, he's locked in a cage with a horrifying monster that is trying to eat him. He also has a bazooka, and literally the last panel of the chapter is him loading the bazooka and pointing it at the monster.

Abilities: Besides his smartness, which I mentioned in his personality, Bon has three main abilities as an exorcist.

1: Aria – Aria is the branch of exorcism that deals with chasing demons out by chanting bible verses at them. Each type of demon has what's known as a Fatal Verse, which when quoted at them will exorcise them and send them back to the world of demons. Technically Bon is still studying this, as he is currently in exorcist cram school for it, but he has memorized the entire bible, as well as what types of demons fall under which book of the bible.

2: Dragoon – Dragoons use guns and other projectile weapons to exorcise demons. So far Bon has been shown using handguns, grenades, and a bazooka. At the point in canon I'm pulling him from, he'll have one handgun and one bazooka (along with the ammo for both) with him.

3: Tamer – Tamers are exorcists who summon demons to fight for them. While Bon is not officially a Tamer, he has taken on a small fire bird-thing known as Karura as a familiar. I'm pretty sure that Karura did not come with them on the 'rescue Izumo' trip (tamers can summon demons to wherever they are anyway, so Kaurura wouldn't have to travel with them to be able to show up later), so Karura will not be with him when he comes to the city.

Besides these, Bon has been shown to have a very strong memory. He can easily memorize just about anything he reads, and can quote it perfectly. He's also physically fit, and spends a lot of time outside of class training his body in strength and endurance.

First Person: [For once, the residents of the city don't have to deal with some poor unfortunate soul who has no idea how to use technology. No, Bon figures out how to use it pretty quickly. But seeing as how his entire world was going to hell right before he arrived, he's not happy. He's not happy at all, and he's not going to mince words.

So, everyone there gets treated to a scary-looking face and some loud yelling.
]

Okumuraaaa! I know you're here, stop being lazy and come help me! That thing got away from me before I could blow it up, and I think I heard Koneko screaming too.

[All of that happened before he ended up on the train, but at this point he is sure that even the train is part of some Illuminati trick. He also wants to check on the others, especially Shiemi because she is the least likely to be able to fight these regenerating monsters, but he figures it's best to find Rin first. If they team up, then theoretically they should be able to rescue the others, if they're still being chased by those monsters.

Besides, if the others hear him yelling, they'll speak up anyway. That's how it always happens.

But Bon is impatient, and after a few seconds, he scowls into the camera before speaking again.
]

Great. Of course that ass wouldn't answer, I'll have to track him down instead.

[He's about to shut off the watch, but he remembers something, and he stops to speak it quickly. Regrouping is vital here, and Bon needs to find the others before they get attacked again.]

Koneko, Moriyama, and Sensei, if any of you are around, I'm at a train station right now. I'll be here another ten minutes, before I go looking for you guys.

Third Person: Even with a towering mass of flesh and limbs standing right there, threatening to eat him whole, Bon couldn't help but wonder if his friends were alright.

Bon was sure he would come out of this in one piece. He had several explosives with him, so at the very least he could blast a hole in the wall of this room and escape that way. He would have preferred to kill this thing, to prevent it from attacking them later, but so far it seemed to be healing too fast to seriously hurt it.

But the others, would they be alright? Rin would, and so would Yukio. Rin could probably burn a monster like this to ash without a second thought, and Yukio…well, even if he didn't have the flames of Satan, Yukio was smart, and he was already a fully-trained exorcist. He was much more suited for a danger like this than the rest of them.

It was Koneko and Shiemi that he worried about the most. Koneko was smart, but not very strong. If they managed to regroup, it would probably be Koneko who came up with the strategy to beat these monsters. But alone, and on his own? Even though he was one of Bon's best friends, Bon had to admit that Koneko was not strong enough to defeat a demon this though on his own. He would need to be rescued.

Shiemi worried Bon the most. At least the others had been shouting or making noise somehow, but Shiemi had gone quiet as soon as they had been separated. What had happened to her? Was she alright? Or had she already been eaten? Bon tried to push that last thought out of his mind, he didn't even want to consider the possibility of one of his friends being dead. No, she had to be fine. Maybe she was just hiding, and had to be quiet to keep from being found.

Nevermind that Bon was standing in a large, rectangular room with no other objects besides himself and this huge demon, and he had no reason to think that the others weren't in similar rooms.

Bon gritted his teeth. Every moment wasted here was another moment his friends came closer to death. They needed him, he couldn't just stand here waiting. He didn't even know what classification of demon this one was beyond 'probably a zombie', let alone what it's Fatal Verse could be, so he would have to go about this the hard way. And in this instance, the 'hard way' meant explosions.

In an instant, Bon ripped the protective covering off of the bazooka he had brought with him. It was new to him, he had only just started training on how to use one, but regular bullets clearly weren't going to be enough here. He had to go big.

"This is also a zombie?"

All of his anger, all of his pain, all of his feelings of betrayal, they were all forced down deep within him. He couldn't dwell on how much it hurt to have one of his best friends be a traitor. He couldn't worry about his other friends, and how they might be dying at that exact moment. He had to focus. If he died from being distracted, then he couldn't help them, now could he?

"That's fine with me!"

With a smirk, he loaded one of the rockets into the bazooka. He effortlessly hoisted it up on his shoulder, aiming it right at the middle of the monster in front of him. If he hit low, it would cause the most damage, which was what he needed right then. He only had five rockets, so he needed to make them count.

But, of course, he couldn't let it go without saying something cool. Or at least what he thought sounded cool, because Bon was hardly an accurate judge of what was cool or not.

"Eat my bazooka!"
